A Cultural Exchange Festival & Parade
The Jazz Crawl Festival is a series of interactive events and classes rooted in New Orleans music, dance, and food. The weeklong festivities culminate with a downtown “Second-Line” parade lead by a cultural gumbo of New Orleans and local musicians, dancers, youth artists, and cultural leaders.
We connect New Orleans brass bands and parade steppers with local musicians and dancers for unique collaborations that introduce the iconic second-line parade tradition to audiences and students at shows, festivals, markets, and other special events.
Our club shows range from jazz masters to New Orleans brass bands, funk, and blues artists. They are wildly interactive with local collaborations and demonstrations from Mardi Gras Indians and S&P Club parade steppers.
Our educational theater shows include performances, interactive demonstrations, and discussions that present the evolution of New Orleans music and dance through second-line parades and other cultural tradition. You’ll learn about Congo Square’s impact on the evolution of American music, the tradition and history behind the Jazz Funeral, and how the power of second-line culture is continuing to bond communities and evolve through youth engagement. LEARN MORE Our music program prepares students to lead our parades alongside musicians, dancers, and students from New Orleans. The in-school, after-school, and online curriculums teach classic second-line parade riffs, percussion, and improvisation. Master classes and youth showcases allow students to share the stage and the classroom with world-class musicians. LEARN MORE There is no particular way to “second-line” as long as you are letting the rhythm and beat of the brass band move you on pace with the parade. However, there are distinct dance forms known as stepping, footwork, and buck jumping that have evolved through generations. Our dance programs introduce various parade moves to students as building blocks for developing their own original style to be showcased in Jazz Crawl parades. LEARN MORE
