Join the Krewe!

A krewe is any group or organization of revelers that band together to host a Mardi Gras ball, ride on a Mardi Gras parade float and participate in social events throughout the year. The festivities of the Jazz Crawl are inspired by the ‘Mystic Krewe of Vieux Do Mardi Gras Party’ that Rick’s Aunt Patty organized from 2005 until her untimely passing in 2012. We are bringing the Jazz Crawl to new cities in 2019 so let us know if you’re interested in being more involved with our expansion!

An Education in Disguise

The Jazz Crawl takes you on a tour through the history of the New Orleans Second Line tradition and street music. You’ll learn about Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, Mardi Gras Krewes, Congo Square, and Jazz Funerals through performances by local dancers, musicians, and singers in the heart of downtown.

New Orleans With a Twist

The cultural presentations are fueled by talented local performing artists. Brass bands and break dancers lead the Second Line parade up King Street. An African drum & dance group emulates Congo Square with a drum circle as everyone gathers at Marion Square. Gospel singers deliver a memorial dirge to recognize the memorial donations and kickoff the remainder of the Second Line parade up King Street.

Capturing the City

In between the two Second Line parades the ‘Krewe’ has a pit stop to observe the works of local artists and photographers that depict the architecture, landscape, and culture of Charleston. Prints are available for sale to support the Jazz Crawl’s instrument donations.

Event Itinerary

ROYAL CORONATION – 3:00pm

The tradition of the New Orleans Second Line originated as a celebration of life at a Jazz Funeral and the Jazz Crawl for Charity was originally established as a tribute to a dearly missed friend that loved introducing people to New Orleans culture. This correlation is highlighted by the memorial donations to honor the name and memory of loved ones through the uplifting magic of the Second Line celebration or an engraved brass instrument donated to a local music student in need.

We crown a King, Queen, Dukes, Maids, and Jesters. Ladies receive concealed roses and men receive concealed Mardi Gras doubloons (coins). After an announcement, everyone opens them up to reveal who is crowned to lead the parade with the ‘first line’. This is a tradition from Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs and Mardi Gras Krewes.

Live music in the courtyard.

Our first second line parade will start up King Street around 4:30 to close out ‘Second Sunday on King’.

ARTIST SHOWCASE – 5:00pm

We showcase the works of artists and photographers that capture the landscape, architecture, and culture of their city.

Zapp’s potato chips for the Krewe.

Around 6:00pm the Krewe will cross the street to observe a cultural presentation of historical Congo Square, the historical landmark in New Orleans known for being the birthplace of jazz music.
